What Is a Silo Website Structure?

Actual website structures are the biggest part of search engine optimization that are overlooked by most people. It’s easier to see keywords, title tags, and heading tags, but it can be much more difficult to determine how well a website is set up for search engine spiders.

What Is a Silo Website Structure?

The meaning and purpose of silo structure are the same as you’d imagine a large corn silo’s to be. It’s as simple as managing your crops. If you have two separate piles of crops, you’d not want them to mix, so you will put them in separate silos. This way, when you enter a silo, you’ll know exactly what to expect. Similarly for websites, putting your website content in silos or categories is what silo website structuring is about.

If you’re wondering how this is possible and how can all of your blog content be linked without crossing over categories, the answer to that is nofollow attributes. Strictly speaking, nofollow attribute is a value that is assigned to an HTML element to instruct search engines so that hyperlinks don’t influence the ranking of the link’s target in the search engine’s index. This way, you can maintain your human organization while telling the Google bot which content is relevant and important and where to find it. So in short, you have to write for humans, but when it comes to optimization, you have to optimize for robots.

When working with silo websites, there are a few easy and simple rules that you should follow for SEO.

The first rule is to keep all the categories separate. This can be achieved by using nofollow attributes whenever linking between different categories.

The second rule is that whenever you are linking to your blog or website, link to the posts and not to the tags or categories.

The third important rule is that you should link between posts more often. The majority of bloggers and website runners link new posts first and then move towards older posts, but going back to older posts and adding updated links to newer posts is more effective. Older posts on your blog or website have a higher PageRank as well.

Another important rule is to keep all categories on the same topic. All the pages on your blog or website should have different titles, headers, and meta tags. It’s also important to have distinct keywords that cover everything related to that particular category. Let’s say your blog or website is about cars; you’ll want to set up a silo for cars, trucks, and motorcycles. But this is a very high level and in reality, you should have more niche.

Take the car silo as an example. Your title should be All About Cars, while your category slugs should be cars, and the meta keywords used should also have cars. Similarly, all the posts made under this category should have the word cars inside the permalink as well as the title. It’s important to understand the strategy when working with silo websites.

The final rule is to use different tools to analyze all of your website’s content. For example, Google’s Webmaster Tools can show you everything that you need to learn and understand about how the Google bot spiders your blog or website.

Maintaining a silo structure for your blog or website can prove to be difficult if you write about a wide range of topics, but it is doable and is something you need to learn, especially if you manage highly-targeted niche sites or blogs.
